Fear’s Ruling

The Project illustrates dependence between reality and fantasy. It emphasizes that every fairy tale, film or article on the Internet is written to manipulate the mind. The drawing was created exclusively by light – The fantasy heroes were highlighted or drawn by shadow with the help of the light modelling lens nozzle. All attention was focused on the mystery of a thought reality. The strobe color lighting, reflecting hero’s condition, was used. Colored flashlights created sharp dramatic luminous lines evoking spirit of the picture With the help of AI, the video was created from some photo’s fragments to reproduce voices tuning in the head of an adult since childhood.

We are used to adults saying to their kids:

“sleep, sleep, baby, or the witch Baba Yaga will catch you”, “listen to me, or that man will get you and take you with him”, “ be quick, or you will stay here alone”.
All these colloquial and so-called innocent phrases and quotes, borrowed from the popular folk fairy tales (i.e. skazki), represent intimidation, indeed.

The same is true about many other fantasy stories, when parents often use them to frighten their children and motivate to obey only with fear.

Visualizing the series of pictures, Irina was inspired by the plots, images and characters of the Russian folk fairy tales.
The photos radiate emotions, ruling over an adult due to the fantasy stories from their childhood and fear, deeply rooted in their subconscious mind by repetition and associations.
The photos translate huge number of overlapping and mixing light sources and textures into artistic language of echoing, threatening and manipulative images.

Balancing between reality and fantasy, adults’ life stretches from a Boss’ snub to a horror film, without even recognizing the fact that every fairy tale, film or article on the Internet is consciously aimed to manipulate their mind.
